One of the oddest things I got to encounter in Abu Dhabi was a dugong. It was the first sirenian I saw in my life, and it was also a very dead one (this dugong is no more! It has ceased to be...)
My superiors had gone off for a walk, and returned saying that we (the two undergrad students, i.e. the cheap labor) ought to go see the dugong on the beach. It had been uncovered by the descending tide and was worth a look.
So we waded, squelched, and trudged our way out a surreal mudflat (one of several, actually) to see this dugong. There was a massive wound to its head - more like its face was gone - and it was on its back, bloating in the sun. It was simultaneously sad and beautiful, and, I'm afraid to say, a bit funny; I couldn't help likening it to a peeling baked potato. Yes, I have a strong stomach.
When we returned to the same site the next day, it had risen so far up the beach that we couldn't find it. It had even dug a shallow trench out as it had been dragged on the sand. Anyway, we reported it to competent authorities, and it was recorded and duly buried.
I still don't know killed it. Propellers don't do wounds like that, AFAIK... A shark, maybe?
I found a dead harbor porpoise on the Oregon coast once, and had much the same impression--beautiful, but sad. (Mine wasn't really funny, though I did see the back half of a dead 'ossum once with his feet sticking up in the air, and that was rather morbidly humorous.)
The first sirenian I've seen was a manatee in an aquarium (yep, Portugal has the only zoo manatee of the Iberian Peninsula. We won to Spain, lalalala )
I really like sirenians, they are my favourite afrotheres. Seeing one dead like that makes me sad

Cool! I do have a morbid fascination with animal remains, but this is still kind of sad. The head looks like that of a duck, except upside down. Is that a result of the injury or am I just seeing things?
Well, I've heard that Bull Sharks (or was it Tiger Sharks?) in Australia's Shark Bay do prey on dugongs and if they follow the same m.o. as for turtles they occasionally go for the head.
I'd like to show you some awesome nature related work from more or less unknown artists which deserve more attention - this is a must see, you won't regret it!!!
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
I'm a lover of visual impacts. I like brilliant colors and shapes. And I decided to collect a whole stack of deviations that reflect that taste. These pieces showcased below deserve every bit of publicity you can give them. x)P

As we grow, we learn nothing when told; but become wise with experience.
