You don't want to run into this in the desert - a "centipede" with no legs that squirms through the soft sand. This species is Herbert's sandipede (Desertipendra frankherberti, if I remember correctly).

Don't centipedes need moisture to stay alive? How does this one deal with the arid desert conditions?
Specialized with a tough, waxy cuticle, and obtains moisture from its prey. Plausible enough?
Centipedes on Spec didn't necessarily follow similar paths as they did on Home-Earth.

Centipedes as long as fingers or larger live in the inland australian deserts with no problem, I don't see how a sand-squirmer would be a problem. Especially if the sand is moist afew meters down, like in Australia's seasonal deserts.
